Multiple Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Strikes Delta Flight Arriving in Sydney, Australia

A number of individuals were hurt when a Delta Airlines jet from LA to Sydney, Australia experienced rough air Friday morning.

Flight DL41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson told. Four flight attendants were injured.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service stated they treated five patients, and transported three to a medical facility with minor injuries that included spinal discomfort and head pain. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.

It is the newest example of commercial jets encountering turbulence, with aviation specialists indicating that global warming is a significant contributor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and 15 crew members on the aircraft, the official added, clarifying that the plane touched down "without further incident" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on the day in question.

The NSW Ambulance Service said they were alerted just a mere three minutes before the plane landed, and response teams were waiting on the tarmac.

Why in-flight bumpiness is getting increasingly prevalent - and potentially more dangerous.

During the past year, 25 people were hurt when a separate Delta aircraft, flying from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, encountered "significant" rough air just a couple of hours into the long-haul flight, and diverted for an emergency landing.

Recently, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight went through a frightening five seconds period of extreme instability. One passenger lost their life and numerous people sustained injuries, as those without seatbelts rose out of their seats and crashed back down.

Bumpy air is not uncommon while flying, and while occurrences of strong or severe turbulence appear to be increasing, they are statistically infrequent.

Estimates show that there are an estimated thousands of instances of severe or worse turbulence each year, out of a total of over 35 million journeys that now take off around the world.

Severe turbulence is described as when the sudden jolts of a plane passing through disturbed air apply greater than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - sufficient force to lift you out of your seat if you did not have on a seatbelt.

As climate change alters the conditions in the sky, specialists caution that flying could become more turbulent: shifts in temperature and altered air currents in the upper atmosphere are projected to boost the frequency and intensity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
